Our Candles

We are a busy florists in the heart of Yorkshire and wanting to expand our range of gifts we decided to start selling candles, however we were unable to source any that we felt suited us so the idea was hatched to start making our own. We handle gorgeous fragrant blooms all day so have expert knowledge of beautiful scents. When we made the decision to make our own candles we wanted to be as environmentally friendly as possible, so after some research we decided to use soy wax for our candles.

The soy wax we use is 100% GM free, no pesticides or herbicides are used at any stage in its cultivation.  Soya beans are, of course, a renewable source and the wax is naturally bio-degradable, so it is really is an eco-friendly product.

We also want to make the best quality candles too, and the great thing about using soy is that it has ‘excellent fragrance-holding qualities’ – which means our candles give a long-lasting and even scent through out the time they burn, and they are longer lasting and cleaner burning than paraffin equivalents.

Soy wax burns cleaner than paraffin wax, which is made from crude oil, with no petrol-carbon soot that can blacken walls as well as releasing toxic carcinogens into the air.

We don’t use any colourants or dyes in our candles, so they are all white, or cream in colour, with a smooth and clean finish.

The only thing we add to the natural soy wax is our gorgeous high quality fragrance oil. We don’t add any other chemicals or artificial additives to our handmade candles.

Our wicks are also 100% natural and are specifically designed to burn best in soy wax candles.

Candles Safety

Used correctly, soy candles can add beauty and atmosphere to your home, however it is important that they are handled in the right way to prevent accidents. Here are some general candle safety guidelines:

  • Soy candles require a slightly larger wick than paraffin candles and proper burning and care of the wick is essential to ensure safety.
  • The wick must be trimmed to 0.25cm – 0.5cm before each lighting to prevent the flame from becoming too large and the wick from smoking.
  • The first time you burn your soy candle allow it to burn for at least 1 hour or until the whole surface is liquid with wax. If you do this each time you burn your candle, you will get the best out of it.  Soy wax has a memory which is why this stage is important, avoiding unsightly ‘tunnelling’.
  • The maximum recommended burn time is 3-4 hours per burn. Candles allowed to burn for longer than this may smoke.
  • If the flame smokes it must be extinguished and the wick trimmed to 0.25cm – 0.5cm before relighting.
  • Never touch the surface of the container while the candle is lit – extinguish the candle and allow the candle to cool before touching.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Always read and follow manufacturer’s instructions supplied with our candles.
  • Burn out of reach of children and pets.
  • Extinguish candles with a candle snuffer. Do not blow them out. Never use water to extinguish a candle.
  • Ensure candles are placed at least 10cm (4ins) apart and allow headroom above the candle for the heat to disperse.
  • Ensure candles are burned away from other sources of heat such as television sets and away from direct sunlight.
  • Candles should be burned in an area free from draughts as draughts will cause a candle to burn uneven and smoke.
  • Never let the flame of a container candle touch the container surface.
  • Remove all packaging and labels before use.
  • Place candles on a suitable heat-resistant surface to prevent damage to furniture.
  • Ensure candles are burned in an upright position.
  • To avoid damage to surfaces, always place candles and candle holders on a surface that will not be damaged by heat e.g. ceramic tiles or plates. Table mats are NOT suitable.
  • Do not move candles when lit or the wax is still liquid.

Discontinue use when 1cm of wax remains at the bottom of the container.

Using and storing Soy Wax Candles

We’re sure you’ll enjoy burning our pure soy wax candles, but as they are handmade using only natural soy wax, fragrance and colour, without other additives, they are quite different from the mass-produced paraffin wax candles available on the market.

  • Soy wax is sensitive to temperature fluctuations, it has a low melting point so can begin to soften above 25c so should be stored at room temperature in a dry place avoiding high temperatures. If they do begin to melt either move them to a cooler area or wait until the weather changes and they will return to their original form
  • In warm conditions small droplets may appear on the top of the candle. This is normal and will not affect the burn quality of the candle.
  • Soy Candles can be damaged or discoloured by strong light sources such as sunlight or fluorescent light. They should therefore never be exposed to strong artificial light or sunlight.
  • Soy candles may become cloudy or develop a pale frosted appearance at cold temperatures. This is a normal feature of soy wax and does not affect the performance of the candle. To avoid this, store soy candles at room temperature.
  • Soy candles that are poured into glass may have areas where the wax appears not to be adhering to the glass. Again this is normal and is caused by temperature fluctuations which cause the wax to expand and contract.
  • Lastly you may notice some slight variations in size, shape or finish of the candles. This is because our candles are individually handmade and are not produced on a mechanised production line. Each candle is therefore unique and these slight imperfections do not affect the burn quality or performance of the candle.
